Distilling as amazing innovation

For millennia the simple fact of alcohol-induced self-limitation on fermentation meant that there were ceilings on the strength of the product. To get drunk on a 12 per cent wine or a 4 per cent beer is none too difficult, although some of the traditional alcoholic drinks of the developing world have an alcohol content so low that it would require agricultural and brewing resources beyond that of any village to make widespread intoxication at all likely.

Introduction to Alcohol (part I)

Wednesday, January 19th, 2011

Alcohol in terms of its molecular structure is C2H5OH. Thus to a spine of two carbon atoms are attached five hydrogen atoms and a hydroxyl (oxygen-hydrogen) group. That constitutes a fairly simple structure carrying rather little information, and alcohol has therefore sometimes been referred to disparagingly by biochemists as a ‘stupid’ molecule. Its structure is much smaller and less interesting than those of such complex mind-acting chemicals as heroin, nicotine or the cannabinol which is the core drug constituent of cannabis.

Coffee contain toxic

Saturday, January 15th, 2011

A study by researchers at Duke University Medical Center shows that caffeine taken in the morning has effects on the body that persist until bedtime and amplifies stress consistently throughout the day. These results show for the first time that the effects of caffeine last considerably longer than originally thought, said the scientists, and that caffeine exaggerates stress in people who consume it every day.

The study, which was funded by the National Institutes of Health, appears in the July/August 2002 issue of Psychosomatic Medicine.

“The effects of coffee drinking are long-lasting and exaggerate the stress response both in terms of the body’s physiological response in blood pressure elevations and stress hormone levels, but it also magnifies a person’s perception of stress,” said James D. Lane, Ph.D., associate research professor in the department of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Duke and lead author of the study. “People haven’t really accepted the fact that there could be a health downside to caffeine consumption, but our evidence – and that of other studies – shows that this downside exists and people should be aware of it in order to make the best possible health choices.”

Coffee is harmful to specific persons

Monday, January 10th, 2011

Drinking coffee is associated with a number of health benefits, including reduced risk for Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, colon cancer and even suicide. However, on the negative side, coffee can cause a number of problems for susceptible individuals, particularly in large doses.

Coffee and Hypoglycemia

Caffeine causes a release of glycogen by the liver, which can generate wild swings in blood sugar, causing attacks of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Hypoglycemia has a variety of unpleasant symptoms, including weakness, nervousness, sweating and heart palpitations.

Coffee and Cholesterol

In some individuals, coffee can raise cholesterol, which increases the risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

Common Causes of Diarrhoea in Children

Thursday, January 6th, 2011

There are so many causes of diarrhoea in children, but viruses lead the pack. You’ll know if your child has diarrhoea cased by a virus if they complain of a stomach ache and they are vomiting as well. Often, the child will get cramps that go away once they have a bowel movement. It may be hard to determine if small children are getting cramps as they may not understand what the term means.

It’s nearly impossible to tell the diarrhoea causes in infants and in the first two or three months of life, an infant can become dehydrated very quickly. If you have a newborn with diarrhoea, call your doctor. They will let you know what to do in terms of keeping your infant hydrated. (more…)

Extremely much coffee is dangerous

Tuesday, January 4th, 2011

Many sober, law abiding people who would never dream of knowingly ingesting a mind- altering drug, actually consume one every day—caffeine!

Caffeine is so pervasive in our culture and in many other cultures that we often forget it is actually a drug that affects our brain. Caffeine is present in coffee, tea, many cola drinks and over the counter medications.

The most common way that most of us ingest caffeine is in the form of coffee. And some of us drink many cups of coffee in a day.

If you are one of those people who drinks a lot of coffee daily, you probably wonder what all that coffee is doing to you. Is coffee really bad for you, or is drinking coffee just a harmless vice? Can it be possible that coffee is actually good for us?

The research on coffee shows mixed results. Some studies show that drinking coffee increases the rate of heart attacks, while other studies have shown that drinking large amounts of coffee decreases the risk of diabetes.

There are nutritional advisers who claim that coffee makes us age faster, wears out our adrenal glands, and causes all sorts of untold damage to our cells. (more…)
