Crystal Meth and Your Teen
Saturday, November 27th, 2010Methamphetamine, is a synthetically produced drug that has a crystalline appearance, hence the name ‘crystal meth’. It goes by numerous street names like ice, tina and glass. It is taken by oral ingestion, injection (after dissolving in water), snorting, piping, (burned and fumes inhaled) or inserted as an anal or urethral suppository. Meth acts as a very potent stimulant, and is highly addictive. It pumps the body’s energy similar to adrenaline. Therefore, it increases heart rate and blood pressure when used. Meth also causes weight loss, mood elevation, anorexia (decreased appetite) and increased sexual pleasure. In chronic use, it can cause mental dysfunction similar to schizophrenia.
Teenagers are highly susceptible to crystal meth use. One important factor is peer pressure. Their need to belong can lead them to experiment, until unknowingly, the use turns to abuse. Data on the National Survey on Drug Use and Health 2004 states that roughly 12 million Americans 12 years and older has had experience using methamphetamine at least once in their lifetime. This number represents almost 5% of teenage population.
This is a wake-up call to all parents. Be aware that the first intentions fin your teen’s use of crystal meth may seem harmless, like wanting to lose weight, and also to keep awake during examination week. Their first use may easily turn to addiction.
If you are a parent and unsure of what to do next, find out how to save your teen. There are places which provide immediate assistance.

Strategy to Improve your Search Results in Google
Sunday, November 21st, 2010I do a lot of marketing research and search engine optimization work for websites, and my clients always ask me the same question when we start: “How do I make my website the #1 result in a Google search?” After I respond with the obligatory, “Pay me to put it there,” I tell them the truth that you can’t actually pay anyone to put you in the first result on Google, and there is no simple way to get there overnight. I invariably have the same lengthy discussion with them explaining how Google ranks its search results, after which they usually ask me, “So do you know anyone else I can pay to get the #1 result?”
While you can’t simply pay someone to guarantee you the top search result on Google, and you can’t even pay Google, with some time and effort you or an SEO consultant can optimize your website so that you might be able to rise up through the ranks. I’ve compiled a list of the top 10 techniques I use to assist clients in obtaining better search rankings in Google (and oh yeah, those other search engines too).

Study Discoveres that Alcohol More Dangerous Than Heroin
Saturday, November 6th, 2010
Alcohol is more dangerous than illegal drugs like heroin and crack cocaine, according to a new study.
British experts evaluated substances including alcohol, cocaine, heroin, ecstasy and marijuana, ranking them based on how destructive they are to the individual who takes them and to society as a whole.
Researchers analyzed how addictive a drug is and how it harms the human body, in addition to other criteria like environmental damage caused by the drug, its role in breaking up families and its economic costs, such as health care, social services, and prison.
Heroin, crack cocaine and methamphetamine, or crystal meth, were the most lethal to individuals. When considering their wider social effects, alcohol, heroin and crack cocaine were the deadliest. But overall, alcohol outranked all other substances, followed by heroin and crack cocaine. Marijuana, ecstasy and LSD scored far lower.
The study was paid for by Britain’s Centre for Crime and Justice Studies and was published online Monday in the medical journal, Lancet.
Experts said alcohol scored so high because it is so widely used and has devastating consequences not only for drinkers but for those around them.
“Just think about what happens [with alcohol] at every football game,” said Wim van den Brink, a professor of psychiatry and addiction at the University of Amsterdam. He was not linked to the study and co-authored a commentary in the Lancet.
When drunk in excess, alcohol damages nearly all organ systems. It is also connected to higher death rates and is involved in a greater percentage of crime than most other drugs, including heroin.
But experts said it would be impractical and incorrect to outlaw alcohol.
“We cannot return to the days of prohibition,” said Leslie King, an adviser to the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and one of the study’s authors. “Alcohol is too embedded in our culture and it won’t go away.”
King said countries should target problem drinkers, not the vast majority of people who indulge in a drink or two. He said governments should consider more education programs and raising the price of alcohol so it isn’t as widely available.
Experts said the study should prompt countries to reconsider how they classify drugs. For example, last year in Britain, the government increased its penalties for the possession of marijuana. One of its senior advisers, David Nutt — the lead author on the Lancet study — was fired after he criticized the British decision.
“What governments decide is illegal is not always based on science,” said van den Brink. He said considerations about revenue and taxation, like those garnered from the alcohol and tobacco industries, may influence decisions about which substances to regulate or outlaw.
“Drugs that are legal cause at least as much damage, if not more, than drugs that are illicit,” he said.
Hazardous Chemicals still Emits from Green Products
Thursday, November 4th, 2010Widely-used scented consumer products that claim to be “green,” “organic” or “natural” emit just as many toxic chemicals as other fragranced products, new research shows.
The study analyzed 25 scented products; about half carried green health claims. All the products emitted at least one chemical classified as toxic or hazardous.
More than a third of the samples gave off one chemical classified as a probable carcinogen by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, according to the research, published in the journal Environmental Impact Assessment Review. The EPA has set no safe exposure level for possible carcinogens.
About Four Loko Energy Drink
Tuesday, November 2nd, 2010
There’s this drink called Four Loko that has been making some waves recently, mostly due to its high caffeine and alcohol content, and the Bro-attracting pheromones it emits that hypnotizes people with backwards hats that can only say the word chug to drink multiple cans of it. The downside of this (or upside, depending on how much you hate “Bro” culture) is that the caffeine in Four Loko shuts off the body’s natural shut-off moment that occurs when drinking lots of alcohol. You know that moment — it’s when you’ve had one too many and you start to get tired and lose all willingness to take another drink. Four Loko stops that stopping mechanism from stopping you from drinking, which, after a few more Four Lokos, stops your consciousness, and possibly your life. Case in point: nine college students in Washington State were hospitalized for alcohol poisoning, some having a blood alcohol level of 0.35, when 0.30 percent is considered potentially lethal.
